Araujo’s Late Leveller Earns Uruguay a Point Against Saudi Arabia
Abdulelah Al Amri’s first-half goal had Saudi Arabia dreaming before Maxi Araujo struck in the 80th minute to rescue a 1-1 draw for Uruguay in their Group H opener in Miami.
U ruguay, who reached the United States less than 24 hours before kickoff after a travel ordeal, fought back to draw 1-1 with Saudi Arabia in their Group H opener at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Maxi Araujo’s second-half strike cancelled out Abdulelah Al Amri’s opener.
Saudi Arabia lead at the break
Al Amri put Saudi Arabia ahead in the 41st minute, turning home a rebound, and the Green Falcons carried a 1-0 lead into half-time. The defender was booked soon after his goal.
Uruguay respond
La Celeste came out strongly after the break and levelled in the 80th minute, Araujo following up a saved effort to beat Mohammed Al-Owais. Marcelo Bielsa’s side pushed for a winner but had to settle for a point.
Group H finely balanced
Both Group H openers ended level, this 1-1 alongside Spain’s 0-0 draw with Cape Verde, leaving the group wide open after matchday one, in front of 62,764 in Miami.
