Ecuador Stun Germany 2-1 to Top Group E in Major Upset
Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata scored for Ecuador as they beat Germany 2-1 at New York/New Jersey Stadium, topping Group E in one of the tournament's biggest upsets.
E cuador produced one of the tournament's biggest upsets, beating Germany 2-1 at New York/New Jersey Stadium on Thursday to finish top of Group E.
Leroy Sane struck in the second minute to give Germany an early lead, but Ecuador levelled quickly through Nilson Angulo in the ninth minute and the match remained in the balance throughout.
Gonzalo Plata delivered the decisive blow in the 77th minute, finishing clinically to send Ecuador to the top of the group. Germany, despite pressing for a leveller in the closing stages, could not find an equaliser.
Ecuador advance as Group E winners. Germany go through as runners-up.
