D avid Beckham has been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, calling the ceremony "surreal" as his wife, Victoria, and friend Tom Cruise paid tribute, the Guardian reports. It came as the 2026 World Cup arrived in Los Angeles.

A "Hollywood story"

Cruise praised Beckham’s journey as "a Hollywood story" of hard work, determination and global influence on sport and culture. In a nod to the occasion, the ceremony swapped the traditional red carpet for a green, soccer-themed one. "I’ve always been a dreamer, but I could never have imagined that an honor like this would come to a working-class English soccer player like me," Beckham said, calling it fitting as the US prepared to celebrate the World Cup and noting how the sport has grown in the country over three decades.

A tribute to Cruise

Beckham, who spent six seasons with LA Galaxy from 2007 and co-owns Inter Miami, told Cruise it was "mind-blowing" to stand in front of "the greatest movie star of our time," adding: "You welcomed us to LA 20 years ago and you have been a loyal friend and an inspiration to me ever since."

A star-studded opener

Beckham and Cruise joined other celebrities at Los Angeles Stadium, where a Hollywood-style opening ceremony preceded the United States’ 4-1 win over Paraguay. Leonardo DiCaprio, Halle Berry, Rob Lowe, Owen Wilson and Paris Hilton were among those watching as performers danced around a giant World Cup trophy at the centre of the pitch.
